HOW TO DO FACE TRACK ON DAVINCI RESOLVE

HOW TO DO FACE TRACK ON DAVINCI RESOLVE

Face tracking in DaVinci Resolve is done using the Tracker tool in the Color page. This is especially useful for color grading, applying effects, or blurring faces. Here’s a step-by-step guide to track a face:

Step-by-Step: Face Tracking in DaVinci Resolve

1. Import and Select Your Clip

  • Open your project and go to the Edit page.
  • Add the clip to your timeline.

2. Go to the Color Page

  • Select the clip in the timeline.
  • Switch to the Color tab at the bottom.

3. Add a Power Window

  • In the Nodes panel, select your clip’s node.
  • Go to the Window panel (circle icon).
  • Choose a shape (usually a circle or custom curve) to cover the face.

4. Position the Window

  • Move and resize the window to cover the face.
  • You can adjust softness for smooth edges.

5. Track the Face

  • Go to the Tracker panel (crosshair icon).
  • Make sure the mode is set to Window.
  • Click the Play forward or Play backward tracking buttons.

Resolve will now analyze the footage and follow the face within the Power Window.

6. Apply Your Effect or Grade

  • Apply your color correction, blur, or other effects to the area inside (or outside) the window.
  • If you want to blur a face:
  • Go to the Blur/Sharpen panel → Increase the Radius.

7. (Optional) Stabilize the Track

  • If the track is jittery, you can use the Stabilizer in the same panel or refine the keyframes.

🔁 Alternate Method: Using Magic Mask (Studio Only)

If you have DaVinci Resolve Studio, the Magic Mask tool allows AI-based face tracking:

  • Go to the Color page → Magic Mask tab (wand icon).
  • Select “Person” or “Face” → Use the brush to mark the area.
  • Click “Track Forward/Backward.”
