How to make gifs in photoshop

Making GIFs in Photoshop is fun and pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Hereโ€™s a step-by-step guide to help you create a GIF in Photoshopโ€”whether youโ€™re working with video clips or still images.

๐Ÿ” Option 1: Make a GIF from a Video

  1. Open the video file
  2. File > Import > Video Frames to Layersโ€ฆ
    • Choose a short segment or limit to every n frame to keep it lightweight.
  3. Adjust the settings
    • In the popup: choose “Selected Range Only” if you want a section.
    • Check “Make Frame Animation.”
  4. Open the Timeline
  5. Window > Timeline
    • If it doesnโ€™t show automatically, enable it here.
  6. Preview your GIF
    • Press play to preview it in the timeline. Adjust frame timing if needed (click the little arrow under each frame).
  7. Loop options
    • Under the timeline, set the repeat option to Forever (important!).
  8. Export your GIF
  9. File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)โ€ฆ
    • Choose GIF, set colors (256 max), and tweak image size/quality to reduce file size.

๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ Option 2: Make a GIF from Still Images

  1. Load images into layers
  2. File > Scripts > Load Files into Stackโ€ฆ
    • Or open all images and copy/paste them into one document as layers.
  3. Open Timeline
  4. Window > Timeline > Create Frame Animation
    • Click the “Create Frame Animation” button.
  5. Make frames from layers
  6. In the Timeline panel menu (top right of panel):
    • Select โ€œMake Frames From Layersโ€
  7. Set duration & looping
    • Adjust timing under each frame (e.g., 0.1 sec).
    • Set looping to Forever.
  8. Export as a GIF
  9. File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)โ€ฆ
    • Choose GIF format and tweak your export settings.

โœจ Pro Tips:

  • Keep GIFs under 500px wide so that social/media platforms can load quickly.
  • Reduce frame count or colors to decrease file size.
  • Use Tween (Timeline panel menu) to add smooth transitions.
